Leatherback Turtle Outing 22-26 Jan 2015
When the sun approaches the zenith of its annual migration, an irresistible instinct fires in female loggerhead and leatherback sea turtles, bringing them up on the coral-sand beaches along the Maputaland coast in KZN to lay their eggs during the summer months. Towards the end of summer the first hatchlings start to appear.
Head out at night to watch thousands of these reptiles race from their underground nest to the inky-black ocean in their struggle to survive. These sea turtles are on the endangered red data list. Even more riveting is the struggle to the ocean of each tiny, vulnerable hatchling. Beset by predators and humans, hatchlings make the journey mostly at night, breaking out of their shells in a race to the ocean.
You’ll find it hard to refrain from cheering when the hatchling gets into the foam line and paddles out into the warm Indian Ocean.
